Gesichter

In the 1970s and ‘80s Greenham also collaborated with a number of artist film-makers. Presented here in the third Cabinet of the Kunsteverein are two 16mm films by Irm & Ed Sommer, Gesichter (1972) and Body Poem (1970).

In Gesichter a series of static faces, including those of Evan Parker, Edith Wahlandt, and Walter Giers, are animated by angles of lighting, double exposure, and camera movement. Greenham’s voice is present throughout, announcing each new face with shifting repetitions of vowel sounds extracted from their respective names. Hers is the last face (gesicht) to appear on screen, quickly zooming in and out to create a strobe-like effect.
