École School presentation
The Institute of Fine Arts of Besançon is the only higher education course in Franche-Comté dedicated to contemporary plastic and graphic arts.
The school
With a team of around twenty teachers and 4 technical and teaching assistants with a professional artistic practice, the school welcomes around 200 students each year from all over France and abroad. ISBA can grant two diplomas: the National Diploma of Arts, DNA?The DNA is the national diploma of art, it aims to validate the acquired skills for students, it is a diploma equivalent to a bachelor’s degree. and the National Higher Diploma of Plastic Expression, DNSEP (equivalent to a master’s degree). The establishment combines theoretical and practical teaching, helped by the «Fronts et frontières» research center, and international cooperation.
ISBA is working on its development within the network of French higher education establishments in the arts by responding to the current challenges of training and entry into professional life.
The building
Within a 7000 square meters building, ISBA brings together multiple classrooms, a library, an auditorium, a large exhibition room, a residence reception area, a projection room, 6 workshops (printing and micro-publishing, ceramics, photography, graphic design, wood and iron), all of which made available for two training courses: Visual communication and Arts.
All these tools allow the school to offer quality training to students, but also to gather outside audiences around amateur practices open to everyone starting from 11 years old.
History
Heir to a long history that began in the 18th century with a Royal Academy installed in the city center of Besançon, the institute moved to the Bouloie campus in 1972. Specifically designed for an art school, the ISBA premises were designed by the Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert who also imagined the buildings of the Maeght Foundation. The building is listed as a remarkable architectural heritage of the 20th century.

ISBA is supported by the City of Besançon, the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Grand Besançon Métropole, the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region.
ISBA collaborates with many organizations in the context of educational and cultural projects: the FRAC Franche-Comté, the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology of Besançon, the University of Franche-Comté, the MABA (Artists Foundation), the Hermès Foundation (Manufacto Project), Les 2 Scènes, CDN Besançon Franche-Comté…
